“[Spectrum] has become a go-to place for contemporary fare”
— Anthony Tommasini, The New York Times
“a cozy, ambitious performing-arts space”
— Steve Smith, The New Yorker
Spectrum was established to “foster innovation and virtuosity in the arts,” and has since asserted itself as one of New York City's enthusiastic venues for modernist, experimental music (and other endeavors), presenting about 2,500 events (so far).
Starting about a decade ago, Steinway Pianos at Park Avenue Pianos has generously provided excellent, concert-grade Steinway pianos for performances at Spectrum. This has made possible many of the most-memorable performances of challenging, intimate-space music in NYC. We look forward to further collaboration.
We started in Chelsea (briefly, 2012), then spent five years on the Lower East Side (2012-2017), followed by three years in the Brooklyn Navy Yard neighborhood (2017 – 2020 pandemic/hiatus). We re-opened in February 2022 on the waterfront in Red Hook, Brooklyn by generous arrangement with BWAC (Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition) – for 3 ½ years, until a tragic fire on 17 September 2025 closed that site. Our principal venue is now a collaboration with MISE-EN_PLACE, located at:
